Collection of weapons

The weapons owned by the Alka Knights Society are basically the weapons that were carried by the Alka participants, the alkars and the alkar’s squires, together with a certain number of gifted or purchased items that serve for the purposes of preservation and presentation.

alkar carries a sheathed sabre hanging from their hip, while the standard bearer’s escort keeps their sabres drawn in the procession and holds them in the right hand, pointing upwards. The duke’s adjutant carries his sabre in the same manner, while also performing a salute with it before addressing the duke. The alkars’ spears, as their equipment for the Alka competition itself, are always made according to the rules described in the founding documents of the Alka Knights Society.

weapons of the alkar’s squires consist of two firelocks and one yataghan, tucked into the wide leather waistband around the waist, together with a flintlock rifle over the right shoulder, which they hold with their hand. The chieftain and the chieftain’s deputy also carry brass and silver ammunition pouches (“fišeklije”) around their waist. The shield bearer, the two mace bearers and the two Edek guides do not carry any rifles. A sabre and two firelocks in firelock holders are also located on the Edek, together with saddlebags hanging from the front part of the saddle.

most valuable parts of the weapons collection date from the late 17th and 18th century, and among them are a unique Persian shield, as well as close combat weapons and firearms.

aim is to replace all of the more valuable weapons carried in the Alka procession either with copies or with modern replicas of these weapons, for the purpose of preserving the originals.
