Sinj – The Town of Alka

The town of Sinj lies in the centre of Dalmatia, in the valley of the Cetina river. It is located in the northwest part of Sinj Field, below Old Town, which was the site of the famed battle of 1715.

At the south entrance to the town, you can find the Big Bridge – an old bridge over the Gorućica stream that is located on what used to be the main thoroughfare. From there, the Alkars’ Racecourse stretches towards the town centre of Sinj. It begins at the Biljeg (mark), the starting point from which the alkars, riding on horses in full gallop, try to hit the alka ring with a spear. The Alkars’ Racecourse, a delightful avenue of thick chestnut trees, is a street and thoroughfare during the year, while during the Alka it becomes a horse racecourse with a dirt surface and stands (palke) at the sides.
